Spanish Coast

Spain’s balmy weather, vibrant culture and spectacular coastline draw Europe’s elite to holiday here year on year.

Superyachts are a common sight at every harbour, and exclusive boutiques and dining establishments have sprung up to cater to their clientele.

A chartered luxury yacht trip along the Spanish coast guarantees a feast for all the senses along the way. Watch the scarlet flamenco skirts twirl in the town squares, sample the aromatic Rioja and paella and wake up every day to a gorgeous panoramic view.

Barcelona

Spain’s second-largest city is the first stop for many luxury yacht itineraries. There is something for everyone to enjoy here. Arguably the art capital of the country, Barcelona may look like a geometric maze from above, but at ground level the streets are lined with unique examples of creativity.

The Sagrada Familia, Gaudi’s unfinished masterpiece, is a must-see for every visitor to the city. The majestic cathedral is an eclectic mix of architectural styles and ornamentation. It is well worth paying a visit to Parc Guell to wander through Gaudi sculptures and mosaics.

Besides art, there is so much to do in the city that there is simply not space to list it all. Near the yacht marina at Port Vell is the Paseo de Gracia, a street known for its designer shops.

Connoisseurs of great cuisine will be more than satisfied by Barcelona’s restaurants. The aptly named Disfrutar (“to enjoy” in Spanish) is currently number 9 on the list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. Succulent offers a tasting menu specially curated for the adventurous foodie.

Before embarking on your yacht trip down the coast, spend a day relaxing on one of the nearby beaches, such as Barceloneta or Nova Icaria.
Between Barcelona and Valencia is a charming small town called Tarragona; the perfect pit stop between two major cities. Roman ruins, including a 2nd century amphitheatre on the beach, have earned it the title of World Heritage Site. Touring the nearby wine regions of Monsant and Priorat is a pleasant pastime.

Costa Brava

The Costa Brava lives up to its name – wild coast. It encompasses the Catalan province of Girona, north of Barcelona. Sienna-coloured rocky outcrops topped with pine trees tumble into the turquoise sea, creating one of the most magical landscapes in the Mediterranean. Watch it pass by from the bow of the yacht as you sail to the next anchorage.

The little coves of Tamariu, Aigua Blava or Llafranc are perfect for a midday swimming break on the way. This shoreline is characterised by medieval Spanish hilltop villages, each one as lovely as the last to explore.

The whitewashed houses of Cadaque were even a source of inspiration to great artists like Matisse and Dali. The waters here are crystal clear, and there are several great spots for wreck diving, like Medes Island and L’Estartit.

There are nearly 20 Michelin starred restaurants on the Costa Brava. Terra Restaurant at the Hotel Alàbriga is an up and coming spot serving up delicacies like lamb loin with black garlic-palo sauce. What’s more, Alàbriga has a private beach club where you can dance the night away before heading back to your luxurious yacht cabin for a lie-in.

World Yacht Week offers luxury yacht charters along the Spanish coast, and across the Mediterranean. Visit our website for more information on price, availability and boat specs.

Valencia

Valencia is renowned for its gastronomic heritage and innovation. There is no better place to try the Spanish delicacy of paella than here, the place it was first created.

One of the city’s most acclaimed dining spots is the Michelin starred restaurant Vertical. Peruse their menu while also admiring the view of the port and skyline; the restaurant is located on the top floor of the Confortel Aqua Hotel.

The biggest event of the year, Las Fallas, happens every year in March. Larger-than-life fantastic statues of famous faces and fairy tale characters are paraded through the streets and then burnt. It is a unique mix of tradition, political commentary and art. For a year-round dose of culture, visit the City of Arts and Culture.

The iconic L’Hemisfèric building resembles an eye and contains a planetarium, cinema and laserium. The equally breath-taking structure of L’Oceanogràfic is Europe’s largest aquarium, with more than 500 species inhabiting nine underwater towers, imitating Earth’s different ecosystems.

Only fifty nautical miles away are the Balearic Islands, extremely popular with luxury yacht charters.
