Sardinia is a remarkable charter vacation spot, credits to its sun-soaked rocky coasts, private swimming coves, extensive white sand beaches, and miles of nature reserve, from coast to coast.
Most itineraries for luxury charter yachts begin in the opulent town of Porto Cervo, the gleaming capital of Costa Smeralda, where untouched cliffs extol their beauty along the glimmering coastline. Porto Cervo is known for its cosmopolitan ambiance, chic boutiques, designer fashion stores, and world-class restaurants.
In the evenings, the city transforms into an electrifying metropolis, with fashionable nightclubs and beach-side parties sounding far past dusk. You must visit one of Costa Smeralda’s most famous locations on the water, the bay of Cala di Volpe.
Continuing south along the remarkable coastline, and the bay of Cala di Volpe which is one of the most renowned places for mega yachts, set sails for a short voyage to another noteworthy location. One of the lesser-known towns in Sardinia is the fetching city of Olbia.
This quaint town is refreshingly authentic and doesn’t attract as much tourism in the summer months. Often cited for its medieval San Simplicio basilica, the Museo Archeologico di Olbio, and the Holy Well of Sa Testa, this humbling town has enough to fill a day with.
From here, head northwest to the archipelago of La Maddalena to find some peace and quiet away from the idyllic Porto Cervo. Along heavenly beaches and aquamarine lagoons, the sands here are virtually untouched by human footprints.
The deserted group of islands along the La Maddalena archipelago offer outstanding snorkeling, characteristically incomparable to anywhere else in the world. These islands are just as steeped in history and mythology as they are in sheer captivating beauty.
Continuing on westward, follow passages of lit stalactite and stalagmite formations in Neptune’s Grotto with an enchanting guided tour through intricate cave systems. Or, if a guided tour is not quite up to par, there are also dozens of stunning subaquatic marine caves, like the Nereo Cave, making it an underwater paradise for scuba-diving fans.
After spending the day along the sparkling coastline in numerous anchorage spots, turn back inward to port in the local historic town of Alghero, a town with a heavy Catalan influence.
Expect immaculate cuisines ranging from grilled cod with pine nuts, a variety of savory stews, fire roasted lamb, and a whole host of seafood delicacies. If desert is on the menu, anything made with Catalan cream is highly recommended.
To discover more of Sardinia’s ancient history, take a short ride further inland toward Palmavera. The prehistoric Bronze Age Nuraghe ruins here date all the way back to 1500 BC. The entire complex consists of several towers joined together, many of them still structurally pieced together.
While heading back to port, it’s well-suggested to stop in with one of the many local osterias for a dinner comprised of handmade pastas and a tall cordial glass of Italy’s finest wine. There’s no doubt that the allure making Sardinia such an attractive yacht charter destination comes from the authentic Italian eateries scattered around the island.
